Clifford Thomas Weir, born March 4, 1928 in Winona, Minn., a long-time resident of Shelter Island, N.Y. and Boca Grande, passed away on July 26 at Eastern Long Island Hospital.
Cliff grew up in Escanaba, Mich., where he met his wife Lois, of 60 years, while racing 21-foot Sea Gulls on Lake Michigan. Cliff was an avid sailor and loved being on the water.
During the summers on Saturday afternoons, Cliff would race his Herreshoff, The Rose, while during the winters he would sail numerous cruising boats from New England to Tortola, BVI.
Cliff joined the Shelter Island Yacht Club in 1978, served as rear commodore in 1998 and head of the race committee for 15 years, from 1994.
Cliff also loved to play golf and was a member of Gardiner’s Bay Country Club for 25 years.
Cliff graduated from Purdue University with a bachelor of science in engineering and attended graduate school at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He then entered the Army and was stationed in the Aleutian Islands, Alaska. After the service, Cliff went to work for AT&T, where he was employed for more than 30 years as a cost engineer.
Following Cliff’s retirement, Cliff and Lois lived in Tortola, BVI for more than 10 years and eventually moved to Boca Grande where he was a member of Lemon Bay Golf Club and the Boca Bay Pass Club.
Cliff is survived by his wife Lois and three children: Tom Weir who resides in the Philadelphia area; Penny Oakley of Old Lyme, Conn.; Mary Sure Weir-Kovalchuk of Minneapolis, Minn.; and six grandchildren: Nicole, Sawyer, Hannah, Anna, Kristin and Collin.
