Allen S. Walowit ,71, of Wilmington, Vt. and Boca Grande died Thursday, Sept. 10 following a courageous battle with cancer.
Allen was born in New York City on July 8, 1938. He was the son of the late Edward and Elsie (Levine) Walowit and the brother of Karen Walowit of Berkley, Calif.
Allen was a graduate of Ithaca College and served in the U.S. Army Reserves.
Allen owned and operated Button Guild Inc. in New York City until retiring to Vermont in 1978. Allen and his wife Barbara established Vermont Destinations Inc. in the early 1980s.
He enjoyed scuba diving, underwater photography, flying, was an avid gardener and history buff.
With his love of flying he assisted the late Bob North in re-opening the Mount Snow Airport in West Dover, Vt.
He was a devoted supporter of the National Rifle Association, a personal safety and firearms instructor and member of the Brattleboro Sportsmans Club.
Allen founded the Boca Grande Cat and Dog Rescue Fund and was very active in cat adoption, matching appropriate homes for felines in Vermont and Florida.
Allen leaves his wife, Barbara, of 30 years, step-daughters Kim Fischer of London and Kristi Fischer of Newton, Mass., grandchildren Benjamin Nathan White and Marco Tiginelli, best friend Peter Gould of New York City and most loved cats Weldon, Maxine and Sherman.
Graveside funeral services were be held on Monday, Sept. 14 in the Riverview Cemetery in Wilmington, Vt. with Rabbi Joshua Boettger of Congregation Beth El officiating.
