Waldo P. Strahan, 90, passed away peacefully on September 13, at home in Cumberland Foreside. Waldo was born June 5, 1919 in Wellesley Hills, Mass. He graduated from Union College and was a member of the Kappa Alpha fraternity.
Waldo served for four years in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II aboard the USS Key West. He summered in Bayside, Maine and wintered for 25 years in Boca Grande.
Waldo worked in the paper industry with the Hollingsworth and Whitney Co. and the S.D. Warren Co. Waldo enjoyed woodworking and furniture making as well as boat building. He was very proud of the Strahan Wallpaper Co. a family business in Chelsea, Mass.
Cruising the east coast of the United States was one his greatest joys. Waldo and Ann made 25 trips from Maine to Florida aboard their motor yacht Sadesu. Waldo was a member of numerous yacht clubs from Maine to Florida, a long-time member of the Boca Grande Club and a founding member of the Trestle Cove Yacht Club of Boca Grande.
Waldo will always be remembered for his sense of humor, his great love of life, and the enjoyment received from the time spent with friends. A strong belief in well-founded values, great pride and love of his family and tremendous love of his country were always of utmost importance. He was loved by many and will be missed by all from Maine to Florida and beyond.
Waldo is survived by his wife of nearly 61 years, Ann; two sisters, Joyce McCarthy of Manchester, Mass., Jean Black of Peru, Vt., and one brother David Gyger of Australia; three daughters and families, Sally and Steve Trenholm, Debra and Bruce Christiansen, Susan Lebel, five grandchildren, Erica and Rebecca Christiansen, Patricia Ruggles, Caitlin and Andrew Lebel and many nieces and nephews.
