Blessing of the Animals set for Nov. 15
The traditional ecumenical “Blessing of the Animals” will take place on Sunday, Nov. 15 at 4 p.m. on the Gasparilla Inn and Club Croquet Court on 7th Street. All island animals are welcome to attend, to be blessed, and have a snack courtesy of “Paws at Latitudes.”
An island custom for years, Rev. Cappy Warner said the inter-denominational, inter-species event is always anticipated by residents.
“The Inn will provide water for pets, and Paws at Latitudes will be present with treats,” she said. “We will also have music by Lisa Umberger. Everyone is welcome, but pets must be on a leash or otherwise restrained and under control.”
The custom is conducted in remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi’s love for all animals, and he has been quoted as saying, “All praise to you, Oh Lord, for all these brother and sister creatures.”
St. Francis of Assisi, one of the most beloved Christian saints, was a 13th century man who was fascinated with the glory of God. While thinking about the nature of man’s freedom within the realm of God, he realized that animals had little freedom as to obeying the will of their creator, and that they simply followed their instincts and obeyed the creator perfectly.
Assisi, slightly envious of the animal’s power, began to strive to find that same “inhuman” quality in himself, and in turn blessed the animals for their beauty and obedience.
