Thieves hit boat that went aground

A Jacksonville man whose boat capsized and ran aground in local waters three weeks ago has reported more than $4,000 worth of items stolen from his sailboat while it was disabled and moored off 29th Street.

According to reports, Carl Gregory Roberts told Lee County sheriff’s deputies that items, including an 8-foot dinghy valued at $1,200, brass rollers valued at $190, and a compass with an estimated value of $500, were taken from the boat after it was stranded on the beach. After the towing company removed the boat on October 22, he realized the items were gone.

Roberts and another man were rescued from the water in the early morning hours of October 18 after the 40-foot sailboat capsized and began to take on water in Gasparilla Pass at 8 p.m. the night before.
