Corky Subak dies at age 79

Mary Corcoran “Corky” Subak, 79, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 15 of cancer. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 19 at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, Park Avenue, Boca Grande.  A reception in the Banyan Room at the Gasparilla Inn will follow.

Mary was born July 22, 1930 in Cambridge, Mass. She earned a bachelor of arts degree from Mount Holyoke College and a master’s degree in social work from the Smith School for Social Work.

Mary was an active member of the Boca Grande community and gave generously of herself.

She was a president of the Boca Grande Art Alliance board, served on the board of the Boca Grande Child Care Center and was on the board of the Friends of the Boca Grande Community Center.

She also volunteered for ESL and for the after school educational programs of Arcadia, and was kind to her many friends who needed a shoulder to lean on.

Mary was an avid reader, loved Boca Grande, had a bewilderingly good green thumb, and possessed a delightful, wry sense of humor.

She is survived by four children, Jane, Kate (Doug Eberlee), Tom (Abby), and Michael (Bridget) in addition to 10 loving grandchildren and four siblings.

She was predeceased by her devoted husband of 52 years in 2007, John Subak.

Mary was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother and a dear friend to many.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Friends of the Boca Grande Community Center (Dee Wheeler Scholarship Fund), PO Box 1222, Boca Grande FL 33921 or to the School District of Desoto County ESL Program (Attn: Tammy, 310 West Whidden Street, Arcadia FL 34266) or to a charity of your choosing would be greatly appreciated.
