Obituary: Sally Robb

Sally Bergman Robb passed away on December 26 at home in Boca Grande after a lengthy battle with cancer.  Mrs. Robb was born in Cleveland on September 9, 1938.

She leaves behind her husband of 52 years, Richard Robb of Boca Grande and Linville, N.C., and three sons, Richard (Debra) of New York, David (Tamara) of Charlotte and Karl (Angela) of Fairfax, Va. In addition, she is survived by four grandchildren, Nathan, Alice, Claire and Max.

Sally enjoyed early success as a golfer, winning her first club championship at the age of 13, the Women’s Amateur Champion of Cleveland and dozens more all the way through her late 60s, including a 19-year streak at Quail Hollow Club.

She played for the Ohio State University and then women’s amateur golf, winning and contending for numerous state championships in Ohio and then North Carolina.

Playing in and organizing these tournaments was a lifelong joy. She appeared on the cover of “Golf Digest” in 1958 as “America’s Most Beautiful Golfer.”

Upon Richard’s graduation from OSU, Sally left school in order to pursue her greatest passions, her devotion to her husband and desire to raise a family. She was dedicated and caring to the end, quietly taking delight in the successes of her family, but never seeking the spotlight.

Sally loved all dogs, especially her own, which she spoiled every day. She was a strong supporter of animal welfare causes, serving on boards and volunteering at shelters and sanctuaries. She was also a proud backer of North Carolina State University. Many in North Carolina, Florida and all over the world will miss a devoted friend with the passing of Sally Robb. At Sally’s request, there will be no service in her honor.
