Obituary: Ed Coey

James Edgar (Ed) Coey Sr., 86 of Rotonda, formerly of Boca Grande, died Monday, Dec. 29 at his residence. He resided in Boca Grande from 1989 to 2006. Born September 13, 1923 in Oakmont, Pa., he was the son of the late James E. and Henrietta (McGough) Coey.

He was retired from Beverage Distributors in Cleveland. He was a member of the Boca Grande United Methodist Church. He was an avid golfer. He was an army veteran of World War II. He participated in the breakout from Normandy and the liberation of France. He was awarded the Bronze Star.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Margaret E. (Kidder) Coey. They were married December 20, 1945. He is survived by children Ronald J. Coey of Belleville, Ill.; David C. Coey of Avon, Ohio; Dennis R. Coey of Scottsdale, Ariz.; James E. Coey Jr. of Medina, Ohio; five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, a brother Clay Coey of Pittsburgh, sisters Jeannette Janssen of Pittsburgh and Doty Spradley of Edwards, Mo.; numerous nieces and nephews, and special friend Bobbie Hildebrand of Rotonda.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Boca Grande United Methodist Church or American Legion Post 113, Rotonda West FL 33947. Following cremation, there will be a memorial service on January 17 at 1 p.m. at the American Legion Post 113, 3436 Indiana Road, Rotonda West.
