Paving construction on Gasparilla Road and the Charlotte County roads of the island will begin in mid- to late-February.
Residents on those roads, including Grouper Hole, Gulf Shores Drive, Northeast Gasparilla Pass, North Island Court and Sunset Pines, will be notified of the exact paving start time at least 72 hours in advance through the use of doorknob tags.
James Layport with Charlotte County’s paving department said he anticipates the project will slow traffic in the area for approximately three weeks.
Ajax is the company that was contracted by the county. They were also sub-contracted for the Coral Creek Bridge project.
The county surprised many residents of the island’s north end when Charlotte’s Tara Musselman announced at a January meeting that their streets and drainage budget came in $200,000 lower than what they had expected. She said residents there could expect to pay a much-reduced rate in that portion of their taxes.
“The county will start paving projects in the greater Port Charlotte area, then move on to Coral Creek Bridge … they will start on Gasparilla Island when they are done with that,” said Musselman.
