BY MARCY SHORTUSE –It’s said that if you remember The Sixties, you weren’t really there. If you have any vague recollection of the time, you can utilize that knowledge to possibly create an award-winning float in the 25th Annual Boca Grande Bike Parade.
If you’re into the smell of incense and peppermints, weaving flowers into your hair or digging out those old bell bottoms for a good cause, the theme of the parade, “Flower Power,” is right up your alley. Let those words ring in your head and fuel your creative spirit as plans are made for the entries into what some call the island’s biggest event, which will be held on Saturday, March 13.
A visit to Spencer’s Gifts in the mall for some black lights might even be in order.
However, Wendy Melvin of the Boca Grande Woman’s club said it doesn’t have to be all about a hippie thing … man.
“It’s a catch-all type of theme,” she said. “You can go with the whole ‘flower children’ theme, or you can simply make your entry beautiful with flowers. We thought it would be fun for the kids to dress up, put flowers on the golf carts, just have fun with it.”
Registration for entry into the parade ends Wednesday, March 10. Entry forms are available at the Boca Grande Community Center.
Parade entrants will start lining up at 9:50 a.m. at 5th Street and the GICIA Bike Path. The parade starts at 10:30 a.m.
Late registration the day of the parade will be held at 5th Street at 9:45 a.m.
No gas-powered vehicles are allowed in the parade, but all bicycles, wagons, scooters, tricycles, basically anything non-motorized, are allowed.
Awards will be given out in four categories: Business/commercial; non-profit organizations; group entry; and children categories.
