I read with great interest the articles in last weeks Beacon on the Friends of the Boca Grand Community Center and the letters to the editor. I do not think it appropriate for Marta Howell, the Executive Director of Friends, to be assailed personally for what was obviously a Board decision. The picture on the front page of the Beacon under the caption “ax falls on kids’ programs” showed what I believe to be the entire Friends Board in the front row of the meeting. Marta is the paid Director; she is an employee of the Board. Both the Munchkins and the After School program at the Community Center are great programs that benefit, directly or indirectly, many of us here on this entire island. But we should ask, is it appropriate for these programs to have to be so heavily subsidized by the Friends organization, especially when so few pupils (and families) are enrolled and taking advantage of these services? This is obviously a question that needs to be answered, and hopefully other additional sources of funds will become available now that this “donnybrook “has surfaced. Let us all unite to solve this funding problem, not to do a hatchet job on someone who is widely considered to be a wonderful addition to the Friends and who has enlivened many of the community offerings.
