We are from Englewood, live here full time, entertain many guests, go out to lunch / dinner and shop often; and we agree 100% with #2 / Terry... We REFUSE to visit Boca Grande any more because of the 'scalping' toll bridge cost!...

Coming from a foreign country (Germany), I like to visit Boca Grande as often as possible, which is about three times a year, altogether 6 weeks. And I call it "little Hawaii". Strolling down the streets, having a coffee at the bakery, lunch at the seagrille, sometimes dinner at the South Beach. My wife always finds nice dresses, pants or shoes. We never park close to the beach, and we never bring our own food. It is also in our interest to keep Boca Grande alive and well, with all the shops, restaurants and businesses. A reasonable toll hike is understandable, but it will hit us twice: the toll itself and the higher prices in the shops. Let me give you an example how things can be changed. Potsdam, a town close to Berlin, is rebuilding the "town-castle", a place where the old Prussian Kings stayed. Everything was financed, except the roof, which should have been made from copper. No money, no roof! In this situation a millionaire, who is a resident of Potsdam, donated 30 Million USD for building the roof.

Mark, sorry for not being clear. If a discount plan is offered, it must be offered to all, not just those with a residence here or those who commute here to work. Diane, Charlotte County registered voters will be able to participate in the referendum if they reside within the bridge authority district. From what I can tell, it appears this wasn't correctly reported in one of the newspapers.

Herb is spot-on once again. As far as the "dual rate" subject, there is, and has been a "dual rate" in existence since the acquisition of the bridge: one for those who pay per trip, and a discounted one for those who purchase a card. If this subject was indeed discussed with The State, it has not been documented, and is mute. Another toll card can, and should be implemented for those with proof of business employment, or ownership. At that time we would not have a single rate, nor a "dual rate", but rather a "triple rate".

I would like to know why ONLY Lee County residents can vote on the Tax issue. There are many of us who live in Charlotte County on the Island. does this mean that only Lee County residents will be effected if a tax is enacted?

To Mark: A dual rate structure was discussed when we debated the bridge purchase. It was okay when the bridge was privately owned. But GIBA is a government agency. We were told, very clearly, that it couldn't be done if the bridge was publicly owned. It seems the Constitution stands in the way. Aside from that, it's a great idea.

placing all the cost burden on the tolls places cost in the same spot there is benefit. Property owners pay twice if they get a tax increase & higher tolls. Local biz owners will pass on the cost to the residents who primarily support their businesses. Also a biz like Hudson's needs to realize that it makes it MORE expensive for a resident to cross the bridge to go to publix to save money. Placing all cost burden on tolls also reduces traffic which will help preserve what makes gasparilla island special

I do not agree. I live in Placida and usually will come to the island for dinner. Any tolls not to mention higher tolls usually will make me reconsider. Perhaps that does not matter and the island restaurants can make it without the locals making their way across the bridge.

This is so simple! Give a break to those that work on the Island, and the shop owners. The balance should be toll based funding. Let's get real. The day-tripper, beach people are bringing 99% of their stuff with them - they are not making a significant impact on the economy. They will pay the higher tolls, and keep coming to the the many quality beaches.
