Read more...James C. Baer, age 56, beloved husband of Sharon L. Santino passed away July 18th at Englewood Community Hospital. Jim was born April 19, 1956 in Chester County, Pa. to Raymond A. and Mary T. (Deeney) Baer, Sr.

Jim was a member and an employee of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles #3885 of Englewood, Florida. Prior to that Jim spent many years in both the construction and tile setting trades.

The firefighters of Boca Grande have been hard at work, wracking their devious minds to come up with the hardest, messiest and most challenging obstacles that Boca Grande has ever seen.

The Beacon has managed to smuggle out an advance copy of the planned route, and, as a service to our loyal readers, we are publishing it so that you have a chance to prepare yourself for the event.

Ready to begin the Boca Grande Pickup Softball Game?

The games are held on Tuesday evenings at 5:30 p.m. at the Wheeler Road Ballfield.

Everyone is welcome to play, beginners to experienced players!

Everyone is willing to share equipment but please bring a glove, ball or bat if you have them.

The sea turtles of Gasparilla Island continue their remarkable recovery from the effects of Tropical Storm Debby. Already, there are more nests known to be on the island than the total number of nests during the 2011 nesting season.

Last year’s total was 311 nests. There are currently 359 confirmed nests on the island’s beaches. There may be more, since markers were washed out in the high tides of the tropical storm.

The Boca Grande Historic Preservation Board met on Wednesday, July 25, to consider two proposals.

The first was the addition of a porch to a single family home on Lee Ave. The proposal requested relief from the minimum setbacks for the property and a minimum lot width and area requirements for the lot.
