FWC releases findings in Bull Bay accident Friday, 24 May 2013 10:17  The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission has completed its report on the two-boat accident in Bull Bay on April 12, and the FWC is holding both Jesse Smith and Capt. Steve Ahlers at fault. Smith, of Port Charlotte, was travelling southwest in a gray 18’ open motorboat. He turned to the south to enter a blind, narrow passage between two mangrove islands when he spotted Ahlers’ yellow boat heading in the opposite direction. This past week was the 20th Annual Hank Wright Golf Tournament and Auction at Lemon Bay Golf Club and the Gasparilla Inn Beach Club. It was a resounding success and raised more than $170,000 for the Boca Grande Health Clinic.

To thank all who were responsible for this accomplishment would be virtually impossible in the space available here, but I will single out some of the more significant contributors, beginning with Dr. Hank Wright who for 20 years has lent his name to this annual event to support the clinic and the community he loves.

“There were a couple of years in Cincinnati where we had a lot of snow, and it gets very dreary along the Ohio River” said Joyce. “We were looking for somewhere to go to escape for a while, and our neighbor’s mother suggested Boca Grande.”

BY MARCY SHORTUSE - A slightly lower millage rate for iguana trapping is a bonus that taxpayers might be facing in the new fiscal year, but the program will still essentially be run the same way it has for the last few years.

With trapper George Cera at the helm, the cost of the program in the new fiscal year will be $95,200. The millage rate will tentatively decrease from .307 to .289, by approximately 6%.

That number, however, depends on property values in the future.
