The Easter sunrise service that is held each year on the beach at the south end of the island led directly to the hiring of the new Head of School for The Island School, Jean Thompson.

“I was looking in the Beacon for the schedule, since I like to attend the service every year,” said Jean. “I saw the article about Rosa (Ramos) leaving and that they were going to begin the search for a replacement. I went to the next board meeting and introduced myself and gave them my resume, and I asked if it would be possible for me to spend a day at the school. That way we could see if it would be a good fit from both sides.”

Percival Porcher Gregg, Jr. (Shay) died on June 16, 2012 after a short illness. Born on September 28, 1916 in Florence County, S.C., he grew up at the Ashby place, which is now known as Quinby.

The son of Percival Porcher Gregg and Constance Ashby Gregg, he graduated from Florence High School in 1934 and worked for the Home Owners Loan Corporation in Washington, D.C. before attending North Carolina State University.

Daniel Patrick (Dany) Magill, 56, of Englewood passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, June 17, 2012.

Dany was born on February 4, 1956 in Berwyn, Illinois but spent most of his childhood on Siesta Key in Sarasota. Dany Magill was always his own man. He got his first job at age 13 and never looked back. In spite of partial paralysis, he continued to work until his retirement three years ago. Dany was an entrepreneur from the beginning.
