FWC break-away jig study refuted by originating scientist Friday, 17 May 2013 10:06 BY MARCY SHORTUSE - In the summer of 2004 Dr. Justin Grubich picked up the phone to take a call from a woman who said she was with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The woman, Kathy Guindon, talked with Justin for about 30 minutes foul-hooking tarpon, and he was asked to provide expert witness testimony on how tarpon feed. Two heads looking for a good Boca home

Here’s a request you don’t hear every day: “Hey Dad, can you drop some heads in the water for me?” Stacy Phillips wasn’t asking her dad to help her conceal a crime, but more a labor of love.

She created two pieces of art, two bronze heads, to be exact, and she wanted the waters of Boca Grande to create their personalities. So she asked her dad to help out.

Higher taxes, higher tolls ... or both?

MARCY SHORTUSE - Three meetings were held this week by the Gasparilla Island Bridge Authority. Many things were discussed, such as higher tolls, higher taxes and personnel replacement.

It was a lot to process, and the bottom line was this: Everyone on the board, and in the audience of each meeting, was pretty confused.

Bush, Parent take fishing tourney top titles

The Boca Grande Community Center hosted the first Youth Fishing Tournament of the New Year on Saturday, Jan. 7 at the Boca Grande Fishing Pier.

Overall “Fisher Boy” for the tournament was Wyatt Bush, with a 16.5 point fish. Fisher Girl was Anna Parent, whose fish garnered 16 points.

Art Alliance to host art instructor demo

An artist demo day will be held on Saturday, Jan. 14 at the Boca Grande Art Alliance, and it’s open to the public.

The exhibit is from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. See the works of the 2012 art class instructors.

Bake sale this Saturday

The ladies of the Boca Grande Woman’s Club will be holding the first of several bake sales this Saturday, Jan. 14, in front of Boca Bargains.
According to the most recent plan, they intend on having a sale every Saturday through January and February.
