Happy Graduation to Abigail, Dafne, Luke and Jake, TIS 2013! Friday, 24 May 2013 10:19 BY MARCY SHORTUSE - Four tassels were turned on Thursday, May 23, as Luke Crosser, Dafne Garcia, Abigail Turner and Jake Van Atten graduated from fifth grade and from The Island School. Prior to their commencement ceremony the four, with the help of others, did a “dramatic statues” and chant performance. Afterward, the third, fourth and fifth graders all participated in a song called “Flip Flop,” written and produced by TIS music teacher Diana Donlon. Read the Full Story
FWC releases findings in Bull Bay accident Friday, 24 May 2013 10:17  The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission has completed its report on the two-boat accident in Bull Bay on April 12, and the FWC is holding both Jesse Smith and Capt. Steve Ahlers at fault. Smith, of Port Charlotte, was travelling southwest in a gray 18’ open motorboat. He turned to the south to enter a blind, narrow passage between two mangrove islands when he spotted Ahlers’ yellow boat heading in the opposite direction. Ahlers, of Boca Grande, was traveling northwest towards the same passage, with three passengers on board his 20-foot yellow boat. Read the Full Story

But, a couple of months ago a very high-profile fashion magazine – Vogue, to be exact – turned up in town with an interesting model. Read more...Tracy Lynn Mills was born in Okeechobee and grew up in the tiny town of Kenansville, just south of St. Cloud and north of Yeehaw Junction. Once a thriving turpentine community, it is now known for its cattle ranches and vast expanses of wildlife preserves. Even today the population is under 1,000.

“I loved growing up in a small town,” smiled Tracy Lynn. “It was a lot of fun. I spent all of my time in the woods, four-wheeling, horseback riding, fishing and going to rodeos. Or course, I had a strict upbringing, being the daughter of a preacher.”

As a beautiful moon sailed over the Boca Grande Pass, Capt. Waylon's team aboard the Blaze took first place in the Howl at the Moon Ladies Night Out Tournament on Saturday, June 2. Capt. Read more...If you have grown accustomed to taking in the beautiful sights of the Boca Grande Causeway by meandering across on foot, you’ll have to make other plans in the near future. The end of an era is nigh.

Next Thursday or Friday, June 7 or 8, the south bridge will see its final traffic after 54 years of service. The temporary bridge is in place, and plans to connect it to the causeway continue.

The temporary bridge is scheduled to be open for just over six months, when the new south bridge will be completed.

Mary Alice King will be honored at a memorial at the Crowninshield Community House on Saturday, June 2 at 3 p.m. Everyone is welcome.

George Wetmiller will be remembered at a memorial service at the Lighthouse United Methodist Church of Boca Grande, located at Gilchrist Avenue and 3rd Street, on Sunday, June 3, at 4:30 p.m.

Read more...BY LIZA STROUT - Eight wounded warriors visited the Englewood area this Memorial Day weekend. Boca Grande Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Lew Hastings went out to extend the greetings of the island to the heroes, hosted by Rudy Salas and AVAST (Amputee V.A. Support Team) of Tampa and sponsored by the Wounded Warrior Project.

The Wounded Warrior Project was founded to help service members who have been injured while serving our country in the days since Sept. 11, 2001. Its mission is “To honor and empower wounded warriors.”
