Happy Graduation to Abigail, Dafne, Luke and Jake, TIS 2013! Friday, 24 May 2013 10:19 BY MARCY SHORTUSE - Four tassels were turned on Thursday, May 23, as Luke Crosser, Dafne Garcia, Abigail Turner and Jake Van Atten graduated from fifth grade and from The Island School. Prior to their commencement ceremony the four, with the help of others, did a “dramatic statues” and chant performance. Afterward, the third, fourth and fifth graders all participated in a song called “Flip Flop,” written and produced by TIS music teacher Diana Donlon. Read the Full Story
FWC releases findings in Bull Bay accident Friday, 24 May 2013 10:17  The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission has completed its report on the two-boat accident in Bull Bay on April 12, and the FWC is holding both Jesse Smith and Capt. Steve Ahlers at fault. Smith, of Port Charlotte, was travelling southwest in a gray 18’ open motorboat. He turned to the south to enter a blind, narrow passage between two mangrove islands when he spotted Ahlers’ yellow boat heading in the opposite direction. Ahlers, of Boca Grande, was traveling northwest towards the same passage, with three passengers on board his 20-foot yellow boat. Read the Full Story

FWC break-away jig study refuted by originating scientist Friday, 17 May 2013 10:06   BY MARCY SHORTUSE - In the summer of 2004 Dr. Justin Grubich picked up the phone to take a call from a woman who said she was with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The woman, Kathy Guindon, talked with Justin for about 30 minutes foul-hooking tarpon, and he was asked to provide expert witness testimony on how tarpon feed. Read more...BY MARCY SHORTUSE - Downsizing tender houses and catwalks in competition for wider shoulders on the future swing bridge were topics of conversation that prevailed at the Gasparilla Island Bridge Authority’s engineering committee meeting held on April 18.

The committee recommended approval of the bridge development report presented by Hardesty & Hanover, after lengthy discussion about cost-saving measures and making a few amendments. They also voted to allow the bridge-building company to continue on to the 60 percent phase of the design plan.

Read more...Reports that Hank Wright is finished playing golf are highly exaggerated. The good doctor was on the links Friday, April 13 to compete with the “Wright Team” at the Lemon Bay Golf Course in the 20th Annual Hank Wright Golf Tournament.

More than $170,000 was raised for the clinic at the event this year.

Read more...Island School fourth grader Karoline Bellamy was the winner of the official tournament t-shirt for the Gasparilla Island Kids Classic Tarpon Tournament. It was announced on Wednesday, April 18 that Karoline’s illustration won her a fishing trip with Capt. Sandy Melvin.

Nick Mostyn won an essay contest, which will allow him and three other friends places on a boat for the tournament. Their captain will be Capt. Waylon Mills aboard the Blaze on May 19 when they compete in the tournament.

Nick, his friends and Capt. Waylon will represent Team Cradle. The Cradle is an 89-year-old child welfare agency in Evanston, Ill. that has facilitated more than 15,000 adoptions.Read more...

This special presentation will benefit the youth programs of the Friends of Boca Grande Community Center.  A donation of $10 at the door is suggested.

Read more...It’s not too late to enter the Whidden’s Back Bay Tournament, which will be held on Sunday, April 22.

On Saturday, April 21 the tournament coordinators will hold a final registration and will pass out of goody buckets at North Village Tiki Bar and Patricks Thai Bistro. Be there at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday. Rumor has it there might be live entertainment at the venue as well.

The public is welcome.

So far approximately 10 boats have signed up. Coordinators expect to have between 10 and 15 boats by the time the tournament begins.
