If you love to play tennis but want a challenging match against new players, the Gasparilla Island Tennis Classic will begin on Sunday, Jan. 27.
The tournament’s sponsor, Dusty Hopkins, said one of his favorite things about playing tennis on the island is the multitude of players. That is, if you can connect with them.
“My goal is to get new people to play with new players,” he said, “not the same people they always play. It’s so much fun, and more challenging, to play new people.”
A mixer will be held on February 1 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the Boca Grande Club Tennis Courts. Snack and socialize, and BYOB.
“Bring your racquet if you want a challenge,” Dusty said.
Call your club’s tennis pro for more information on the party.
The last day to enter the tournament is Friday, Jan. 25. The Classic is open to all island residents, as well as the members of the three clubs where the matches will be held – Boca Bay Pass Club, Gasparilla Inn Tennis Club and the Boca Grande Club.
The first week of competition will be January 27 through February 2, and will feature the 70-and-above mixed doubles, mixed doubles, menʼs singles and ladiesʼ singles.
The next week, February 3 through 9, will feature menʼs doubles, 70-and-above menʼs doubles, ladiesʼ doubles and 70-and-above ladiesʼ doubles.
The cost is $25 to enter. Call the Boca Beacon for more information at 964-2995. Applications are available at all participating clubs and at the Beacon office.
