There was close to a full house on Wednesday, Nov. 2 for the opening game of Boca Grande’s popular bridge club. After some initial glitches, most players mastered the electronic scoring machines that facilitate round-by-round calculations.

Four partnerships scored 60 percent games or more, resulting in a strong competition for first place. Positions continued to change until the final round was over. Many visiting pros and out-of-town players were left in the dust of some of our local members. Boca Grande players Barbara Jenkins and Hilari Fix finished first overall for the big win of the day.

First in A: N/S partners John Segal and Paul Eberman
First in A and B: E/W partners Barbara Jenkins and Hilari Fix (First Overall)
First in B: N/S partners Charles Hemm and George Baker
First in C: N/S partners Ann Treat and Ron Raedeke
First in C: E/W partners Wendy Melvin and Maribeth Cunningham.
Once again, the Boca Grande Duplicate Bridge Party Welcome Back cocktail party at the Whipples’ home was a blast. Players, spouses, pros and beginners equally enjoyed the magnificent sunset, the wonderful refreshments and the general congeniality of the group.

Games are held every Monday and Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Methodist Church. Go to bgdbc.org or call (888) 407-2622 for reservations and information about lessons, etc.

BGDBC Board of Directors, 2011-2012: David Jenkins, Alicia Kunisch, Sandy Jacobs, Jay Whipple, Ted Hoopes, Ingrid Yonker, Jane Adrian; Absent: Richard Simonds

And the Academy Award for teaching the game of bridge goes to … Larry Cohen!

The Boca Grande Duplicate Bridge Club turned out in record numbers to attend a two-day seminar given by world-renowned bridge expert Larry Cohen.

Teaching with a great deal of humor, a marvelous choice of topics, and lots of hands-on advice, the personable Larry wowed the group last week with tips that were easy to remember and important to know.

Jay Whipple, BGDBC board president, deserves a rainbow of feathers in his cap for persuading Larry and his wife to come to the club. Meticulous advance preparation by Jay and Kimberly Whipple and the board of BGDBC allowed the games and events of the day to run smoothly.
