It's a little more than a just a race ... Sally vs. the GORUCK Challenge

BY NIKKI HEIMANN - When Sally Van Nuland quit smoking a few years ago, she didn’t realize just how much of a positive impact it would have on her life.

The manager at Dolphin Cove (formerly the Pink Pony) was tired of coming in third in the 5K races she competed in. She had participated in high school track, so running came naturally to her.

Sally wanted a first place, but knew if she was to achieve it she would have to genuinely leave behind previous tendencies. Hence, her life-altering decision was made.

What turned into a quest for 5K greatness has now turned toward something a bit “stronger.”

Sally has competed in somewhere in the ball park of 50 races, ranging from 5K (3.1 miles) to full marathons (26 miles and 385 yards). She received first place in many of these competitions, but didn’t stop there.

She has been expanding her athletic horizons, becoming involved in organizations that test all-around strength, stamina, mental grit, and camaraderie.
