‘Preserve the past, assure the future’: Johann Fust scheduled to open in April, changes in the works

The Johann Fust Community Library
BY MARCY SHORTUSE - On October 1, Mary Vickers set foot in a library again after two months. But it wasn’t at the Johann Fust Community Library, where she has attended the books since 2002. It was in the Lee County Reference Room.

Mary is now a Lee County employee, and she is diligently cleaning and evaluating books at the small library in the Boca Grande Community Center. When renovations are complete at the Fust Library, Mary and Toni Vanover, the librarian at the Reference Room, will join forces there and the Reference Room will be gone.

Mary’s family has been living in Boca Grande for five generations (her maiden name is Knight), and her family has lived in the Charlotte Harbor area since the early 1800s. She fondly remembers going to the

Fust Library as a child, and even has a vague recollection of the old library boat, the “Papyrus,” that the Amorys ran.

She is, in fact, the exact same age as the Johann Fust Community Library. You can do the math on that one, we won’t divulge those facts.

Having been off for two months, getting back to work and immersing herself in books was a joy. Though the work has been what some may call tedious, she doesn’t mind.

“I’m very excited about this move,” she said.
