‘Friends’ make changes, schedule events

The symposium scheduled for Friday, Nov. 9 has a new name. What used to be, “Water, Water Everywhere and Not a Drop to Drink” has become “Clean Water: A Human Right?” It will be held at 3 p.m. in the Boca Grande Community Center, and the cost is $10. The moderator will be Fred Schlegel. Panelists will include John Hardwick, Jim Williams, Bill Blomquist and Bobby Lue.

Movie viewings are free, and will be held on Thursday, Nov. 8 at 7:30 p.m. and Friday, Nov. 9 at 10 a.m.

The Sleuths movie that was scheduled for November 19 at 7 p.m., regarding John F. Kennedy, has been cancelled.

Also, the Tim O’Brien novel discussion of “The Things They Carried” will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 20 at 1 p.m.

On Thursday, Nov. 8 a panel discussion will be held called “Economic Summit to Explore the Impact of the 2012 Presidential Election,” moderated by island resident John Kissinger.

Mike Giobbe and Walter Meanwell will address the U.S. capital markets and the likely investment climate over the foreseeable future as a result of the elections and current macro issues. Jeff Swift will tackle structural trade deficits, public debt, private debt and the economic consequences at that point in time.

The cost for the discussion is $10. It will be held in the Boca Grande Community Center Auditorium at 3 p.m.

On Friday, Nov. 16 at 9 a.m. an “Introduction to Microsoft Word” class will be held at the Community Center.

On Saturday, Nov. 17 at 2 p.m. Friends will present “Madama Butterfly” from the Met Opera.

On Monday, Nov. 26 Friends will host another National Theatre Live show, “The Last of the Haussmans.” Julie Walters plays Judy Haussman with Rory Kinnear and Helen McCrory as her children in this eagerly-anticipated new play: a funny, touching and sometimes savage portrait of a family that's losing its grip.

Anarchic, feisty but growing old, high society drop-out Judy Haussman remains in spirit with the Ashrams of the 1960s while holding court in her dilapidated Art Deco house on the Devon coast. After an operation, she's joined by wayward offspring Nick and Libby, sharp-eyed granddaughter Summer, local doctor Peter, and Daniel, a troubled teenager who makes use of the family's crumbling swimming pool.
Together they share a few sweltering months in this chaotic world of all-day drinking, infatuations, long-held resentments, free love and failure.

The show begins at 7 p.m. in the Boca Grande Community Center Auditorium.

A writer’s workshop will be held from Friday, Nov. 30 to Sunday, Dec. 2. The guest lecturer and teacher will be Elizabeth Stuckey-French, an award winning short story writer and novelist and Associate professor at the Florida State University. Her book Fiction Writing: A guide to the Narrative Craft is a classic and used in college writing courses.

Following her lecture that will be open to the public on “Writing From the Point of View of a Writer” in the Woman’s Club Room at 2 p.m. on November 30, the first workshop session will be held from 4 to 5 p.m.

There will be two sessions on Saturday, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 2 to 4 p.m., and a follow-up brunch session on Sunday morning from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The format will be based upon MFA graduate workshops. Manuscripts in any genre; short story, essay, part of a novel (10-20 pages), should be submitted online to Denise Searle at dsearle@friendsofbocagrande.org by November 15.
