Drainage ditch work to continue ... when they get some more rocks

We don't need no stinkin' ditches!

BY MARCY SHORTUSE - Progress is being made on the ditches near 40th Street on Gasparilla Road, though a shortage of large rip rap rocks is creating a brief problem.

According to John Solich, Lee County Department of Transportation operations manager, the project that began on December 6 was going great guns until they simply ran out of rocks.

“The size of that rock is abnormal,” he said. “They don’t make a lot of it, it is usually crushed into a smaller-sized rock and then stored. We have to catch them before they crush it.”

Solich said the ditch work would continue on January 2, and might finish up a week or two past the original January 11 deadline.
