BY LIZA STROUT - Roger Lewis is a man with a vision. The forward-thinking gentleman was working for an ad agency in the early 80s when he proposed a campaign to sell the new “personal computer.” At the time, only ten percent of all businesses had a PC, and the home market was all but nonexistent.

Roger received his B.A. from Yale, then he spent a couple of years in the U.S. Army.

“I was part of the military police corps,” he said. “For some reason, when my friends find out, they look at me a little differently.”

After a two-year stint with everyone’s favorite uncle, Roger returned to school. He received his MBA from the University of Virginia, and was quickly hired by the advertising firm J. Walter Thompson.

“At the time, an ad agency was the marketing arm for a lot of businesses,” Roger explained. “Most companies didn’t have their own marketing department.”

After a few years, he was recruited to General Foods, and worked in product management for that company for almost a decade.

Eventually, J. Walter Thompson lured him back with a position in their San Francisco office, focusing on high tech. It was there that he made his personal computer proposal.

The proposal was rejected.
