BY MARCY SHORTUSE - The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) decided at their February 13 meeting to hold off on any action regarding making new saltwater, game and sport fish designations, and directed staff to develop more specific catch-and-release measures for bonefish and tarpon, which should be discussed at the FWC’s April meeting in Tallahassee.

They did determine that they would continue to pursue the end of “gaff-and-drag” tarpon fishing by designating tarpon as catch-and-release only.
That decision was agreed upon by all seven FWC commissioners.

Local fisherman Capt. Tom McLaughlin, one of the founders of Save the Tarpon, was at the meeting. He explained that a good part of the reason the FWC decided to postpone making any decisions was simply due to public misinformation.
