BY LIZA STROUT - The Wednesday, March 6, meeting of the Boca Grande Garden Club was a busy one. First was the election of next year’s officers.

The slate recommended and approved by the membership without dissent was: President Jodie Pearah, First Vice President Barbara Stirling, Second Vice President Sarah Daly, Secretary Kitty Cross, Assistant Secretary Sharon Cruz, Treasurer Mary Anne Hooker and Assistant Treasurer Angie Humbarger.View More images >>

The speaker for the meeting was Rebecca Sweet, author and garden designer. She spoke about one of her specialties, vertical gardening. She explained the many methods for vertical gardening, both in awkward spaces and in non-traditional areas. She also discussed the various reasons that people opt to garden vertically, from space constraints to the creation of a living wall.

It was also announced that the Garden Club will be replacing and planting a garden around the Community Center sign, once all of the appropriate permits have been acquired. The plantings have been especially chosen for the climate and environment of Gasparilla Island, and it is hoped to be the first of several public gardening projects to be created by the Club.
