BY NIKKI HEIMANN - Would you enjoy spending the afternoon enriching your knowledge of this quaint and majestic village of Boca Grande? If so, then the Boca Grande Historical Society has a treat for you.
They have recently put together an enjoyable historic tour now available through Island Bike ‘n Beach on Park Avenue. What’s even better is that special iPods can be rented to help you find your way, and keep you informed about the history of where you are.
A special offer is presently available to rent two tours and two bicycles for two hours. Golf carts are also available for a more leisurely experience. This tour only takes about an hour to complete, and the audio can be played by section in any order desirable. The tour by itself costs $10.
The tour begins with instruction and introduction at Island Bike ’n Beach, where a map is provided outlining the route with a number key and pictures. Moving towards the center hub of our small town – the old railroad depot – the tour describes the old days in this area; people only being able to access the island by train, and the importance of the goods imported and exported from our southern port.
If you follow the suggested course, you will then head towards Gilchrist Avenue to see the island’s distinct downtown churches and listen to how they all came to be.
The tour becomes particularly interesting when it comes to the beachgoers section; they explain how the island’s population grew over time and who was involved with making that happen. Louise du Pont Crowninshield, Hugh Sharp and Henry Du Pont are mentioned throughout the tour; their prominence on this island is certainly something to be remembered.
Other interesting places visited during the tour include:
• The Banyan Patch• Boca Grande Community Center• The Island School• Henry Du Pont House• The Teacherage (Boca Bargains)• Dishong-Bowen House (Boca Grande Art Alliance)• Louise du Pont Crowninshield Community House• Banyan Street• Boca Grande Health Clinic• Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church• San Marco Theater (PJ’s Seagrille)• The Palmetto Inn• The Anchor Inn• The Gasparilla Inn & grounds• Sam Murphy Park
This self-guided audio tour has invaluable information about the village of Boca Grande that can be enjoyed by anyone interested – whether you’ve lived here your whole life or are just day tripping – it is a great way to get to know the history of our charming community.
