On Sunday evening, May 12, Jeremy T. Metzig of Boca Grande was involved in a single-car accident in the GICIA median between 9th and 10th Street.
Metzig was traveling south on Gasparilla Road at about 50 mph when he saw a small animal in the road. He swerved left to avoid the animal and lost control of the 2000 Honda Accord. The car crashed into a stand of palm trees and shrubs in the median, and came to rest on its side.
The Boca Grande Fire Department and Lee County EMS were first on scene. Metzig refused EMS transport and stated that he was not injured in the crash. When Lee County Sheriff’s deputies arrived on scene, they asked for Metzig’s license. Metzig stated that he did not have one, and had never had a driver’s license. This was confirmed by Lee County dispatch.
The car’s owner responded to the accident and provided registration and insurance information.
Metzig showed no signs of intoxication, and passed all field sobriety tests. He was cited with driving without a license and careless driving.
It is estimated that $50,000 in damage was done to the median. Approximately $2,000 damage was done to the car.
