The movers were busy last Monday and the staff of the Lee County Reference Room and their volunteers have been unpacking all week for the expected reopening of the Johann Fust Community Library which is planned for Monday, June 10.
The Library Foundation entered into an agreement with Lee County to combine collections and library resources to provide expanded community library services. A $1.5 million renovation of the Johann Fust Library was completed with the support of contributions from many island residents. A new Media Library was created in the former garage and a separate Children’s Library is now where an old potting shed was located.
Librarian Toni Vanover and Assistant Librarian Mary Vickers will be offering full library services, although a public copier will not be operational for another week or so.
The Stratton Reading Room, named for the late James W. Stratton, will house the Fust Library’s rare books and special collection. The Library’s Loggia will be utilized by local organizations for meetings and the expanded garden area will certainly serve as the perfect background for various library special events, as well as private weddings and functions.
“None of this could have been possible without the very generous support of hundreds of people who expressed their love for this historical venue and the mission of the Library Foundation,” said executive director Jon Bednerik. “The board led by President Chris Cowperthwait and Vice President Alice Gorman, were instrumental in reaching out to the community for this successful capital improvement campaign,” he added.
The Library Foundation has already begun planning a season-long series of author’s lectures, book signings and the Metropolitan Opera presentations for the winter and spring.
The library’s official community open house and celebration will be November 8. Until then, come on by and be among the first library patrons to utilize this amazing improvement to Boca Grande’s beloved library. View More images >>
