BY MARCY SHORTUSE - Next week the doors to The Island School will open once again, and 38 students will be entering to begin a new year of education. An open house will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 6 from 5 to 6 p.m. It’s a great time to tour the facilities, meet the teachers and enjoy light refreshments.
School will begin on Thursday, Aug. 8. Principal Jean Thompson wants students to be at school by 8:15 a.m. when the bell will sound. Prior to this year, the bell signified the start of the school day at 8:30 a.m. The school day ends at 3 p.m.
Replacing teachers Heather Crosser and Melissa Elsberry this year will be Megan McCoy, Dawn Olson and Natalie Orobello.
Megan McCoy was raised in Englewood and graduated from Lemon Bay High School. She attended Florida Gulf Coast University and has been working at Treeline Elementary School in Ft. Myers. Dawn Olson has more than 20 years’ teaching experience including early childhood and elementary education. Natalie Orobello has worked in the field of early childhood education for more than 17 years, most recently in Charlotte County as an early childhood resource teacher.
View More images >>The teaching structure will also be different this year. According to Thompson, all teachers will be teaching all core subjects at the same time. Students will be grouped based on needs and learning styles, not necessarily grade level. Groups will be flexible and may be different for each subject.
Special classes, such as art, physical education and music and computers will be held each afternoon instead of on Friday mornings.
Students must wear the school uniform every day: khaki bottoms, collared shirt with school logo and closed-toe shoes, preferably sneakers. Uniform shirts should be polo or rugby-style shirts in solid colors.
The shirt must have a button collar, and the embroidered logo should be on the left breast. Peter Pan collars and Oxford-style dress shirts are also acceptable.
Pants should be khaki only. Students can also wear khaki shorts, skirts, skorts, jumpers or dresses with The Island School logo embroidered on them.
As far as shoes go, no Crocs, sandals, high heels or backless shoes. Athletic shoes are recommended.
Uniform shirts, jackets, pants, shorts, skirts and more can be purchased online at landsend.com, preferred school number 900062423.
Uniform shirts can also be purchased at any store, and the logo can be sewn on by Tropical Punch. This year, as in the past, an anonymous donor has agreed to pay the cost of the logo embroidery. Contact the school for more information.
There will be no “casual Fridays” at TIS anymore. In their stead the school will hold various “spirit” days throughout the year.
There are still openings at The Island School for children who live on the island or whose parents work here. Contact the school at 964-8016 for more information.
The tax-free weekend to buy school clothes, supplies, electronics and accessories will begin on Friday, Aug. 2 at 12:01 a.m. and will end on Sunday, Aug. 4 at 11:59 p.m.
