Doris Kasnias, 91, the matriarch of the group who now lives in northern Florida, made a pilgrimage to her childhood haunts on Saturday, Aug. 17 accompanied by her nieces, nephews, children and their spouses. From Cayo Costa to Useppa to Cabbage Key, then back to Gasparilla Island, Doris and her extended family took a trip through time and down memory lane.
First, the boat headed for the Cayo Costa docks on the Pelican Bay side of the island. From there Doris could see Punta Blanca, where she spent much of her childhood. The island, which she remembered as a thriving community complete with a school and boat works, is covered by trees and brush now, the few remaining signs of past habitation obscured from view from the water.
