Jack Damioli, president and general manager of the Gasparilla Inn & Club, which donated use of the course and its beach club, emceed the awards ceremony that evening. He joined representatives from presenting sponsors Gulf Coast International Properties and Grande Aire Services to give out some of the awards and trophies.
The highlight of the ceremony – besides the food and drink – was a live auction. Jack Collins of the Sarasota Kennel Club won a round of golf at The Inn, including a night’s stay there, along with a round at Coral Creek with a $1,700 bid.
The event wasn’t without its rivalries. The competition did get fierce at times.
Dave Chatham had the longest drive in the bag from very early on. He was confident in his win until Wayne and Randy beckoned him to the scoreboard.
They said, “You better come look at this,” Chatham said. “Danny Stickley had beat me by a yard and a half at the last hole. I couldn’t believe it, but it was all in good fun. He and I had a good laugh over that.”
