Boca Bay bicycle burglar caught minutes after crime occurred

Read more...A bicycle thief was arrested just minutes after the complainant called to report the theft.

On Thursday, Nov. 24, Damon Michael Boykiw, 28, of Englewood was found at 1st Street and Gilchrist Avenue at approximately 9 p.m., while riding a bicycle taken from a Boca Bay resident’s garage.

According to reports the sheriff’s deputy was en route to meet with the bike’s owner when he found Boykiw riding what appeared to be a very similar bike.

Reports show that, when questioned, Boykiw said he was visiting his grandfather on the island, and went into the restricted community of Boca Bay because he wanted to “go exploring.”

In the basket of the bike the deputy found cans of spray paint.

The owner of the bike determined that it was, in fact, his bike, and Boykiw was charged with felony grand theft. The bicycle was worth $450.

Boykiw is still being held in the Lee County Jail.
