Are you ready to play tennis? The annual Boca Beacon Gasparilla Island Tennis Classic is accepting applications for all ages and levels of tennis enthusiasts.
The Classic is open to all island residents, as well as the members of the three clubs where the matches will be held: Boca Bay Pass Club, Gasparilla Inn Tennis Club and the Boca Grande Club.
The first week of competition will be January 27 through February 2, and will feature the 70-and-above Mixed Doubles, Mixed Doubles, Men’s Singles and Ladies’ Singles. The next week, February 3 through 9, will feature the Men’s Doubles, 70-and-above Men’s Doubles, Ladies’ Doubles and 70-and-above Ladies’ Doubles.
Pick a partner or go it alone, applications are available at the host clubs and the Beacon office. There is a $25 entry fee. Call the Beacon at 964-2995 for more information.

Two Boca Grande Kemp’s ridleys — the most endangered sea turtle species on Earth — were returned to the wild on Thursday following rehabilitation by Mote Marine Laboratory. The two turtles will be tagged with special tracking devices, and their case histories are contributing to a major research study by Mote and the Conservancy of Southwest Florida.
