Letters to the Editor: Local scout and his troop help keep islanders safe

“Warn when passing” is now prominently stenciled on the GICIA’s Bike Path at crucial intervals, approximately every 200 yards. The project was completed on Saturday, Sept. 22, the work of Liam Hugger of Boca Grande (he is the grandson of Rick and Karen Hugger). Liam was assisted by volunteers from Boy Scout Troop 198 of Rotonda.

Liam has lived in Boca Grande for seven years. He is 13-years-old, in his fourth year of scouting, and is an 8th grade student at Charlotte Academy where he is studying math, English, social studies, science, and Spanish.  

When he’s not at school or studying he likes to play golf, tennis and, of course, spend time with his friends.  

Currently Liam is working toward Life Scout level and the Bike Path stenciling service project is part of his community service requirement. Merit badges are essential to moving up in rank and Liam has earned 13 for consideration of advancement. Once he reaches Life Scout level he will then be focused on working toward attainment of Eagle Scout status.       

This project was one that the GICIA Bike Path Committee was considering as part of its ongoing safety program and Liam’s service project came along at an appropriate time.
