To the Editor:
On behalf of the Friends of Boca Grande Community Center we would like to thank all those who participated in the Civil War Reflections Symposium.
It was without doubt an exciting weeklong program looking at the Civil War through the eyes of different people who were affected by the war.
The week started with over 350 school children from The Island School, Charlotte Academy and L.A. Ainger Middle School visiting the reenactors to learn about the Civil War first hand. Mary Murnighan, from LA Ainger said about her students, “When they talk to their children and grandchildren in the future about what school was like, our students from today will talk about this day with fond memories.” Many thanks to the scores of volunteers who helped make such a memorable day.
We would also like to thank the steering committee, some of whom have worked over 16 months bringing this program to life: Ann Fletcher Barbara Edgerton, Bart Richards, Bobbie Marquis, Candy Hooper, Denise Searle, Elaine Skypala, Erica Martin, Fred Berger, John Kissinger, Kerrill Taylor, Linda Rollyson, Lisa Arundale, Nancy Lingeman, Sandy Jacobs, and Warner Bass.
To our generous sponsors who demonstrated confidence in our ideas by supporting us financially, we sincerely thank you: Gasparilla Inn & Club, Gulf Coast Community Foundation, Ann & Bob Fletcher, Sandra Irvine, Addy & Bob Melvin, Clair & John Bissell, Ann & John Shaw, Lisa Arundale, Jane & Tom Oliver, Erica & Gary Martin, Doris & Bart Richards, and Irene & Ross Robbins.T
here were many organizations that provided support for the program and we thank them for their involvement: Literature Forum, Johann Fust Community Library, Live Poets Society, Royal Palm Players, Friends of Boca Grande Community Center, The Boca Grande Historical Society, Boca Grande Chorale, Boca Grande LIVE!, and Lee County Parks & Recreation Department.
Our deep appreciation goes to all the volunteers, actors, singers and support staff whose time, talent, and enthusiasm is the backbone of Boca Grande.
Finally, thanks to all who attended. We hope you enjoyed the program as much as we did in putting it together. See you next year for Civil War Reflections 2014.
