Tyler Beasley and Justin Robinson, two of our hometown boys, are on their way to Las Vegas in a few weeks to compete in the Re/MAX World Long Drive Golf Championship and they could use our help! They have put together a golf event to help fund their trip out West this Saturday, Sept. 7, starting at 3:30 p.m. at the Palms in Rotonda at 266 Rotonda Circle in Rotonda.
There will be a long drive exhibition at 3:30 p.m., followed by a scramble beginning at 4 p.m. Prizes will be awarded for the top three places, closest to the pin, and the longest drive.
There will be a 50/50 Raffle and a hole-in-one receives a 2013 Rotonda Golf & Country Club membership. Hole sponsorships are available by calling (941) 697-8118.
Tyler Beasley and Justin Robinson both grew up in Englewood. The duo graduated from Lemon Bay High School in 2006 and were both active in high school sports. Tyler played football, soccer, baseball and entertained the crowds as the school mascot, and Justin played baseball and golf for Lemon Bay.
In 2008 both Tyler and Justin enrolled in The Golf Academy of America in Orlando, where they both got serious about the game of golf. Both men graduated with associate degrees in business science and went to work in the industry – Tyler at the Gasparilla Golf Club in Boca Grande and Justin at Oyster Creek Golf Club in Englewood.
At present Tyler is the assistant golf pro at Rotonda Golf & Country Club - The Hills & The Palms, and Justin is the superintendent of grounds at Oyster Creek Golf Club.
Tyler Beasley watched The Re/MAX World Long Drive Championship on ESPN in 2009 and, confident in his uncanny ability to hit a long ball, he entered his first Long Drive event in South Carolina in the winter of 2010, where his longest drive was recorded at 403 yards. View More images >>
Following Beasley’s lead, Justin Robinson hit the ball 398 yards at his first Long Drive event in the summer of that same year. Since then both men have had a lot of success in the sport, culminating this year with both of them qualifying for the RE/MAX World Long Drive Event on September 23 to 27.
The competition is being held in Mesquite, Nev., where 192 of the best and longest drivers in the world will compete over a four-day bracketed competition (similar to the NCAA bracket, only without rankings) where the best move up each day, vying for a spot in the coveted top-eight winners. Those finalists will be flown back out, all expenses paid, to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway to the worldwide stage (broadcast by NBC and the Golf Channel) to compete for the Winner-Takes-All $250,000 prize.
The golf scramble at The Palms this weekend is going to be an exciting event where you can play a round of golf, win some fabulous prizes, watch Tyler (ranked 111th) and Justin (ranked 153rd) show off their long drive skills and help send two young local athletes to Las Vegas to compete.
The fun starts at 3:30 p.m. at Rotonda Golf & Country Club Palms Course and you can call (941) 697-8118 to sign up. For more information or to donate to their trip, call Tyler Beasley at (941) 468-0853 or Justin Robinson at (941) 270-7820.
