BY MARCY SHORTUSE - Last Thursday Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation commissioners decided in a unanimous (7-0) vote to ban the Boca Grande jig and to more clearly define the legal language surrounding the word “snagging.” If you are one of the people who don’t think this will make much of a difference in the scheme of things, you might want to rethink your position.
BY MARCY SHORTUSE - The Florida Department of Environmental Protection will soon make a decision as to the fate of several parcels of land in our area, including on Gasparilla Island and Cayo Costa. The state organization is thinking of selling it off to purchase more valuable land elsewhere.
BY MARCY SHORTUSE - One aspect of the bottom-weighted jig saga has closed, as Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commissioners voted unanimously to adopt new language regarding Boca Grande Pass tarpon fishing gear and to prohibit the use of bottom-weighted gear in the Pass at their meeting held in Pensacola on Thursday, Sept. 5.
