Richard J. “Dick” McCann, 73, of Wheaton, Ill. passed away peacefully in his home March 12, 2013.  

BY JACK SHORT - Wentworth Caldwell grew up immersed in Civil War history and groceries, though he’s involved more with the former than the latter since moving to Boca Grande 10 years ago. He also volunteered at the lighthouse museum until last year, and now spends his days with his wife, Barry, and dog, Bentley, soaking up the small-town feel and history of the island.

Karl E. Karalus Jr. of St. Cloud died on Feb. 12, 2013. He went home to the Lord peacefully, surrounded by those he loved.

BY NIKKI HEIMANN - The surrounding waters of Boca Grande and many other beaches along Florida’s coast have been hit hard with the malignant algae, Karenia brevis. The onshore winds have been affecting many people who spend their day on the island. It’s become normal to hear a chorus of coughing around town, especially when outdoors. This red tide has been lingering, coming and going since October. It has been reported that this is the worst outbreak since 2007.
