The woman, Kathy Guindon, talked with Justin for about 30 minutes foul-hooking tarpon, and he was asked to provide expert witness testimony on how tarpon feed. A trek into the mangroves

Last Saturday, Beacon writers Liza Strout and Jack Short were treated to a kayak ecotour by Barrier Island Parks Society. The trip started at Don Pedro landbase, continued on Don Pedro Island, along the beach and through a mangrove tunnel into a lagoon.

Beacon up for 13 awards in the Florida Press Association contest

The results of the Florida Press Association’s 2012 Better Weekly Newspaper Contest are in, and the staff at the Boca Beacon will once again be bringing home awards in multiple categories. This year, the Boca Beacon was the only island publication to win awards, 13 in total.

BY MARCY SHORTUSE - When Jack Short moved from Pennsylvania to Florida as a pre-teen, it took him some time to make the adjustment. After all, the towering trees and welcoming woods of the Keystone State are dramatically different than the saw palmettos and scrub brush here, and he was a huge fan of exploring the outdoors.

It took our new writer here at the Boca Beacon about 10 years to come to the realization that here in Florida, it’s not necessarily the woods you want to explore ... it’s the water.
