BY LIZA STROUT - At an emergency meeting on April 19, it was announced that Gasparilla Island Bridge Authority Executive Director James Cooper had resigned on Wednesday, April 17. The resignation was effective immediately, citing "personal reasons."

Fourteen-year GIBA veteran and Accounting Manager Kathy Banson-Verrico was voted unanimously by the board to fill the post of interim director. See Friday's Beacon for more details.

Read more...BY MARCY SHORTUSE - Several Boca Grande fishermen and environmental spokespeople from Boca Grande came together in Tallahassee on Wednesday, April 17 to hear an announcement that gave them hope: The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission unanimously voted to move forward with a proposal to make tarpon catch-and-release only.
